The collection consists of twenty letters from Dr. Traill Green and Rev. Thomas C. Porter. Traill Green was a noted physician in Pennsylvania. He had a long career at Lafayette College (1837-1897) as a professor, administrator, and trustee. Green's seven letters (1840-1846) to Brakeley relate primarily to botany and natural science. Rev. Thomas C. Porter was a member of the Lafayette College Class of 1840. He was a professor of botany, zoology, and geology at Lafayette College (1866-1896). Porter was an avid botanist and wrote several books on the subject. Most of Porter's thirteen letters to Brakeley were written from his pastorates in Pennsylvania and Georgia. On two occasions, Porter asks about his long time friend Margaret "Maggie" Junkin Preston, daughter of Lafayette College president George Junkin, and poetess laureate of the Confederacy.
